As we stand immersed in Ravenna's old dock, our gaze trying to make sense of what remains of the former Agricultural Consortion, a ticking steals into the ear, keeping time for the giants of steel. This is the opening of In tangibile giacenza [Tangibly Remaining], a context-specific sound installation that gathers the fruits of research carried out among those who live, and once lived, in the dock area. Voices and field recordings are blended, edited and reworked here so that sound becomes the common ground where what was meets what is. Time is a human construct that becomes tangible through change. Minute by minute, the voices decay and the sounds expand, as if seeking to fill ever more of the void left behind by human abandonment. Past and present merge inextricably until they dissolve back into silence, until the landscape is once again left to speak for itself, punctuated by a faint ticking.
